 Issue # 01 : : October 2004

Dear Alumni,

It is with pride that we bring to you this first issue of the ISE Alumni e-newsletter. We hope to reach out to all ISE graduates right from the early batches of the 1970s to the graduates of 2004 and beyond.

As we are re-establishing lost contacts, we seek your support in updating your profiles with us, forwarding the e-newsletter to fellow alumni members and visiting the revamped ISE Alumni website. The website has been given a make-over to make it more vibrant, up-to-date and beneficial for you.

These are just some of our efforts taken to revive the ISE Alumni. In July this year, the latest graduates were warmly welcomed into the alumni with a Graduation Lunch and the upcoming Alumni Brunch hopes to gather the Class of 2001 to 2004 for a networking session over a sumptuous spread.

More exciting activities will be coming your way. We invite you to join us in the activities, voice your opinions and suggestions and send us your contributions.

Thank you for spending time to read our inaugural issue. We aim to bring you updates on the department, interesting feature stories, self-enrichment tips and the latest on the ISE Alumni. We hope you would enjoy the news and stories that we have for you and look forward to bringing you the next issue.

Best Regards,
The Editor

 The Path of Engineering Education

According to a study by the National Academy of Engineering, engineering education must anticipate and adapt to the changes in engineering fields. Although the study focuses on engineers in the United States, engineers in Singapore face a similar situation. As the global economy develops, the expectation on engineers becomes more demanding as engineers are expected to be all-rounders.

In response, engineering schools of local universities and polytechnics are offering inter-disciplinary courses which combine a field of engineering with a non-engineering field which reflects the needs of changed market

conditions. The direction of the path of engineering education augurs well for the field of Industrial and Systems Engineering as the application of its techniques encompasses a wide range of areas. Nonetheless, continuing education is important, so please look out for announcements of upcoming seminars, short courses etc via the ISE Alumni website!

 Burned By IT

The industry has adopted information technology (IT) very well, although with many pitfalls. Nike faced difficulty in installing supply chain software that cost US$400 million. Cisco System’s real-time forecasting system’s failure to spot an imminent freefall in demand for networking equipment led to a US$2.5 billion inventory write-down and the firing of 8 500 workers. [more...]

Based on the concept of bypassing retailers and selling personal computer systems directly to customers, Dell avoids delays and costs of an additional stage in the supply chain. [more...]
