The Inaugural SDP Student Showcase, held on Friday, 11 April 2008 at the Engineering Auditorium, was attended by the whole ISE community and special invitations were also extended to industry.
This event is a public showcase of selected past and present Systems Design Projects (SDP). The SDP groups were on-hand to explain to the visitors about their projects. Current students were invited for a glimpse of the SDP experience before-hand and to be able to ask their seniors questions on their experiences.
Besides students and alumni, representatives from industry were invited as well. Through this event, the Department hopes to generate more partnerships with industry as well as to promote the capabilities of our students and graduates. As most employers are not aware of the unique skill set of ISE graduates, this is part of the Department's effort in reaching out to industry. ISE alumni also play a critical role in this effort, being a bridge between employers and the Department, as they can better explain or be live examples of what ISE graduates do. Besides being potential employers for our graduates, the invited companies may also explore other avenues of collaboration such as offering projects for SDP, FYP or even big-scale research projects.
The Department also took the opportunity to thank the companies and organisations that have been involved and have been supporting the Systems Design Project module by presenting them with tokens of appreciation during the event.
The Systems Design Project is one of the core modules offered to students in the Bachelor of Engineering programme in the ISE Department. The objective of the design project is to provide an opportunity for students to gain practical design experience in an actual industry setting. Such experience will also provide students with a broader scope of industrial engineering by applying a range of IE-related concepts rather than concentrating on any one particular subject area.

Once again it's time to congratulate our latest batch of ISE graduates. The Department was proud to have produced 151 graduates this year who attended the commencement ceremony held at the University Cultural Centre (UCC) on Sunday, 13 July.
The commencement ceremony saw 54 graduates from the B.Eng. Mr WONG Ming Guang, our B.Eng. graduate, was given the honour to deliver his speech to the congregation as valedictorian of his cohort. Special mention also go to Mr ZHOU Qi for being the first ISE graduate who was awarded two concurrent degrees. He received a Bachelor’s degree from ISE as well as a Master of Science degree in Management from the NUS Business School. For his outstanding achievement, he received the INTEL Medal and Prize.

Q. What have you learnt from NUS in your academic field of specialization? I think more than anything else, I have learnt both the science and art of approaching a problem. The science of understanding the objective and constraints, methodically formulating the problem and dissecting it. And the art of developing innovative solutions and realizing these changes in reality.
Q. What have you learnt from NUS in terms of dealing with fellow students and the community?
|
|
One thing that is increasingly evident to me as I work with people is how distinctly different each individual is. Even though we've been raised through similar environments, each of us has developed our own unique set of beliefs, principals and even behavioral quirks. It is in this context of individual uniqueness that I think communication is the key.
We each have our own opinions, thresholds of stress, level of patience and expectations of each other. All these and more will have to be intentionally communicated in order for a team to truly excel together.
Q. Now that you are graduating - what does NUS mean to you and the future?
Well, NUS will always be a mark of excellence for me. Graduates from NUS do have reason to stand tall and proud for having completed, I would say, one of the most rigorous and demanding schools in the world.
Mr Alvin LUA Wei Chung graduated with First Class Honours from the B.Eng. (ISE) programme. He is currently working as an analyst with CDL Hospitality Trust.

TAN Ping Hong and Janny YU were interviewed during the recent Commencement ceremony on the highlights of campus life in NUS and being part of the ISE Department. The following are excerpts of their live interview.

TAN Ping Hong (extreme right) during his Students Exchange Programme |
During my four years in NUS, I had the golden opportunity to participate in an exchange program in Europe. The experience gained from the six months is tremendous and one that I will never forget. Besides acquiring a global perspective, it was a good chance for me to hone both my interpersonal and independence skills. The program allows me to meet students from various nationalities and form an extensive network of contacts all over the globe.
|
Being in ISE, I also attained analytical skills that can be applied in any industry.
Last but not least, I would like to thank all professors and mentors who have helped me in one way or another during my time in NUS. I will not forget the friendships that I have made in NUS.

Personally, I believe that the greatest difference between being in a university and all my previous school years was that there was no strict path to follow for anyone. We were overwhelmed with options and opportunities and hence each experience is unique and mine was no exception.
I chose to be active in my hall of residence: playing various sports, taking part in cultural and organisational committees and in short, trying out things that I have never experienced before. Academically, apart from the rigorous training in my specialization, I was a member of the multi-disciplinary University Scholars Programme which exposed me to various fields and skills beyond those in my main course of study. I also had the privilege to embark on a Student Exchange Programme
|
to the University of Toronto in my third year, which I would say is life-altering. It was interesting seeing another side of the world and looking back on ours from another point of view.
In all, I would say my experience in NUS was one full of opportunities, about living life to the fullest and having no regrets when you leave.

Graduates and families alike were in high spirits as they gathered at KR-50 Restaurant and Bar at the University Cultural Centre (UCC) the ISE Department's Graduation Lunch. It was held right after Commencement ceremony on 13 July 2008 to celebrate the successful completion of their respective degrees.
Included in the itinerary was a short prize presentation to acknowledge the University award winners, the recipients of the Dean's List as well as the ISE Club committee members who have contributed to the Club throughout their undergraduate years. The graduates and guests were treated to a spread of gourmet dishes specially prepared by the restaurant.
Associate Professor TANG Loon Ching, the new Head of ISE Department, congratulated the graduates on their hard work and success and wished them well in their future endeavors. Associate Professor TAN Kay Chuan, newly appointed as chairman of ISE Alumni Relations and Publicity, welcomed the latest batch of graduates into the ISE alumni family. After being away from NUS for a year, the Class of 2007 was invited back on campus for the ISE alumni Homecoming event at the University Hall on 31 May 2008.
They were welcomed back to campus by the newly appointed Head of Department, Associate Professor TANG Loon Ching, and the new Chairman of ISE Alumni Relations and Publicity, Associate Professor TAN Kay Chuan.
The alumni were glad to meet up with their fellow ex-classmates and it gave them the rare opportunity to catch up especially those who have not seen each other since graduation. The alumni also enjoyed a good view of the campus grounds from the Linkbridge and for most of them, it was their first time stepping foot into University Hall despite their years of study on campus.
They were updated on the latest developments in the Department and how they can do their part as alumni. There was also a mini exhibition of past Systems Design Project posters and the SDP coordinator, Associate Professor LEE Loo Hay, took the opportunity to explain how the alumni and their companies can be involved. The alumni mingled amongst themselves and the academic staff, played games and lucky winners received prizes in our lucky draw.
