| The
mission of IAQ is "to fully utilize the leadership of the
Academicians, individually and in teams, to advance worldwide,
the knowledge, understanding, and communication of the philosophy,
theory and practice of all activities involved in achieving
quality for the benefit of people". To date some 65
individuals, all prominent personalities in academic, business
and government circles, have been elected Academicians based
on their career achievements.
Prof
Goh has been active for more than 25 years in teaching,
research and publication in Quality Engineering. He
is internationally known for his work in statistical methodologies
for excellence in quality in manufacturing, with some results
already becoming advanced textbook materials. He also serves
on the editorial boards of several international research
journals, and has been active in the professional programmes
of the Singapore Quality Institute for many years.
Prof
Goh is currently Head of the Industrial and Systems Engineering
Department, which offers an MSc (ISE) programme with Quality
and Reliability Engineering (QRE) as an area of specialization
-- the first of its kind in East Asia. This programme has
won significant recognition from industry recently when
Motorola, winner of the 1988 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality
Award in the US and the 1996 National Quality Award of Singapore,
donated to the University an endowment fund for an annual
book prize for the top graduating MSc (ISE) student in QRE.
In May this year, Dr Sun Yesheng,
one of Prof Goh’s former PhD students, received the Singapore
National Productivity Award (Individual) for his outstanding
work in reliability testing while employed at Silicon Systems.
Dr Sun’s award further reflects the very tangible contributions
of the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department to
the manpower development and application of QRE in Singapore.
