As the General Chair of IEMC 2004 I am privileged and
delighted to welcome delegates to the conference. The
combination of Singapore as the conference venue and the theme
Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development
offers a suitable opportunity indeed for international delegates
to discuss, debate and deepen our knowledge on a topic.
Singapore and the Asia Pacific region in general have developed
spectacularly in the past decades, especially in the industrial
sectors. Success however is usually accompanied by its own set
of problems and old success sometimes cannot be sustained. These
two basic rules apply to the economy as well as individual
companies and organizations. In the wake of the recent economic
slowdown, partially attributable to the ^tech-bubble ̄ and
ill-conceived business ventures at the turn of the century, it
is therefore apt to have IEMC 2004 as a forum to discuss the
issues, problems and opportunities that many companies across
the world commonly face. For this and other reasons the
Organizing Committee chose the conference theme.
IEMC 2004 is also special in another aspect. It is the first
time that both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers and the Institution of Electrical Engineers, both
with worldwide membership, are behind the conference
organizationally and financially . It is also the first time in
nine years that IEMC returns to Singapore.
Finally, Singapore prides itself as conference city. With its
many modern facilities and multicultural attractions, and
surprisingly rich and colorful flora and fauna, delegates will
have many opportunities to enjoy the stay in Singapore. It is
therefore my great pleasure and privilege to invite delegates to
participate in IEMC 2004.
