Increasingly, there is a need for academic departments in the University to reach out to industry and other partners for research funding and ideas, as well as pursue interactions so as to maintain the relevance between academic work and real world applications. It is acknowledged that in strategic areas, the objectives, structure and culture of a usual academic department may not be able to provide a ready interface between its faculty members and industry or foreign collaborators.
The Quality and Innovation Research Centre (QIRC) has been set up in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Faculty of Engineering of NUS. This centre will build upon the excellent track records of its members to develop education and research initiatives related to quality and reliability engineering, service quality, and innovation management. The centre aims to be a flagship of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in its mission to contribute to Singapore 's knowledge-based industrial development in a global economy.
The centre director is Professor TN Goh and he is assisted by Professor M Xie as deputy director. The founding members of the centre have an excellent track record in research in the area of quality engineering and management. In the recent years, over 100 journal papers and 5 books are published in this area, and together they hold over 20 editorial board membership.
