Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) has recently adopted a decomposition technique developed by Prof Ang Beng Wah (and his collaborators) to analyse changes in energy use in Canada. The technique, called the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) methodology, was adopted by the OEE in 2006 to replace another decomposition technique that it had used for a number of years. The switch is reported in the 11th edition of the OEE's publication Energy Efficiency Trends in Canada, which can be found at:

Decomposition analysis has increasingly been used by national agencies and international organisations to track changes in economy-wide energy efficiency, and pioneering work in this area has been conducted in the ISE Department. More on decomposition analysis and the LMDI technique may be found in the paper Energy Policy 32 (2004) 1131-1139.
