| With
the support of the Department, ISE graduate_students have
initiated a seminar series called "Meeting with ISE Alumni
Series". The students will regularly invite ISE Alumni
to give seminars that may or may not be academic in nature.
Invited alumni may speak on their past research topics in
the ISE Department, or on such issues as their present jobs,
ISE job opportunities in industry, and so on. The main objective
of the series is to allow research_students
to meet the alumni and learn from their experiences. It also
helps to bring the alumni back to NUS, forging a closer relationship
between them and the Department. The organization of the seminars
will be done entirely by the students, with an ISE academic
staff serving as their advisor.
Dr
Liu Xuan Qing, who received his PhD degree in Industrial and
Systems Engineering from NUS in 1994, gave the first seminar
on 28 August 1999. The seminar and meeting session, which
lasted for about two hours, was a great success. Dr Liu, who
worked for AT&T Microelectronics after graduation and
is presently ScoreCard Project Manager with the Standard Chartered
Bank, was able to answer numerous questions posed by the students.
After his presentation, Danny Sondakh, an MEng degree student
from Indonesia, said, "I learn a lot from his talk about the
value of research studies at NUS. His talk has broadened my
view on the versatility of an ISE degree and the relevance
of this discipline to Singapore industry."
