Abstract
Maintenance, repair and strengthening of existing structural components are important activities for structural engineers. Structural components deteriorate with time due to exposure to environmental stressors which reduce the integrity of structural components. Periodic inspection followed by suitable maintenance activities can restore the structural component to its near original condition. Deterioration of reinforced concrete components in coastal areas can be attributed to the corrosion process that the embedded steel undergoes. It is necessary to assess the time for corrosion initiation and the time for propagation leading to failure of the component. Corrosion initiation time can be delayed by adopting proper maintenance strategies and extending the service life of the components and structure.
